What is a 'finger', with regards to alcohol?!

Question:

What is a 'finger', with regards to alcohol?

Does it just mean a fingers depth in the glass?

Answers:
It's the measure of liquid refreshment that is in the glass, and pertains to the width, not length, of the finger. If you have "Two fingers of vodka" in your glass, you would be able to wrap two of your fingers around the bottom of the glass and the vodka would be at the level of your top finger.

It's what some nice person does to you after you both have had some alcohol

its slang for a singel shot of spirits

one finger would be the width of one finger, two fingers is this width of two, and so on...

a haphazard unit of measure , now a slang term for fill it up ::!!!

It means you had to much drink and got the finger i did that to John Kerry

It's what you give the bartender when he cuts you off. Happy Friday 13th!!!Sorry I couldn't help you more.

not completely sure... but i think it's about a shot

I'm a bartender, and the only time i have ever used or heard that phrase is when we were refering to how many layers of people were clustered around the bar. On a busy night, we would say something like "It was crazy, the bar was 3 fingers deep with people" Every finger representing a different line of people standing behind a different line. But that may just be a Denver thing.

Yes. It referees the width of a fingers depth in the glass. Two fingers would be the width of two fingers depth.

Put the glass on the table. Hold your finger horizontally on the bottom of the glass. Usually you make two finger drinks. Just fill with alcohol to the top of your finger. That's all.

lay your finger sideways on the side of the liquor bottle. The width of your finger is the volume of liquor in a finger. Obviously, this will vary depending on the container. But when your drinking, that level of accuracy is not important.

That's my understanding. (Holding the finger sideways, of course).

I did a quick Google search and found two articles (see below).

mainly used in America, I believe it refers to a measure of spirits before we had optics or proper measures if you held a glass in your hand it would be up to the first finger what we would call a single two fingers would be a double

svetlana's answer may not be correct but it's a lot more interesting

yeah, its just the depth of a finger

Yeah its what you do in drinking games when you have to drink a fingers worth of alcohol down the glass.

you drink the width of you finger as you hold the glass .ie if it was full when you started after wards it would be one fingers width from the top . its usually used as a for fit in drinking games , and it's normally three fingers .

It used to be a game played in a pub quiz, if you answered the question wrong you would have to drink one finger of your drink in one go, and if you didnt you would have to drink 2 etc etc.if you were stupid you would end up really drunk very quickly

one finger would be the width of one finger, two fingers is this width of two, and so on...

Yes it means exactly that. It's an Americanism & therefore ambiguous. How big is your finger? How wide is the glass?

Try not to worry about it...

a small peg
