I recently got a bottle of..?!

Question: ..Cordon Rouge 1969 champagne. Unfortunately, it hasn't been kept temperature controlled or in any controlled environment at all really. Indoors is about the best I can say.
Is there any way to tell if it is still good? (without opening it, obviously.)
Thanks in advance.

It is possible to actually have the bottle tested whereby they are able to use an xray like machine to test the levels in the bottle without opening it.

This is however not 100% accurate and expensive, for this kind of thing the best way to go is to check the cork for wear and tear. If it moves easily it is almostly certainly tainted.

Without proper cellaring a Champagne of that age is very unlikely to have survived. I had to tthrow out a bottle of Penfolds Grange 1966 a few weeks ago so know how you feel.

Good Luck!

No. Sorry.

Nope. You need to open that up. It's probably bad.

No. It will be pretty funky.

Hold it up to a light see if it is murky. It probably isn't going to be very good but the only REAL way to know for sure it to taste. Sorry

If it's been in the dark and the temperature fluctuations haven't been severe, it might be OK.

Chances are that it is still drinkable -- if you like the taste of old Champagne.

But the only way to find out is to open it......

Problem is likely to be the cork -- although the bit that sticks out the bottle looks good, the bit inside the neck that provides the seal tends to shrink.

no. the only way is to open it and taste. good luck

I had a similar letdown, a magnum of moet et chandon which i kept for years hoping it would be fantastic when we opened it on our child's christening,,,,,only to find it very poor, with little fizz

As long as it is chilled before consumption if the seal hasn't been broken.

Sweetie hope you are ready to taste some pretty nasty stuff.Just going to have to open and see. I really don't want to laugh, but I have memories trust me. still laughing.

Plan an occasion to open it, but have a backup bottle newly bought. That way you won't be too disappointed.
