Is This Normal, It Was Extremely Annoying . . .?!

Question:

Is This Normal, It Was Extremely Annoying . . .?

Hey All,

Me and a friend went to Walmart together (carpooled to save money on gas and enjoy each other's company). Anyways,,, we purchased some groceries and my friend purchased some wine. We each had our own separate purchases, but the cashier asked to see both of our I.D's (since she could tell we knew each other). I sarcastically asked "would you like her's too?" I pointed to my friends little daughter.....

I like to purchase wine or champagne for my husband and I to have together in the evening...but sometimes I have my younger sibling with me (while shopping). I would by livid if I was told I couldn't purchase this because I had a minor with me....

What are your thoughts?

Actually...for-kick-and-giggle... the cashier wanted to see your id (when you weren't the one purchasing the alchohol) what would be your response?

Yea, this happens all the time. It's a policy in many stores. It makes no sense to me. You can just easily go outside and come back in by yourself. This supposedly stops people from buying drinks for underaged drinkers.

I'd be annoyed too! But, I'm guessing that the cashier was required to ask because of the folks out there who DO purchase alcohol for minors. It's probably a store rule.

proboaly a store rule to see ID

I'm sure they asked only because you were around the same age and it could be possible she was buying it for you (with the thought that you are under age). If you had a younger person with you I don't think that would happen, however the cashier has the right to refuse to sell alchol to anyone. If that were the case you would simply have to go to a different store.

The poor cashier is only doing her job. It's not her fault that you look so young, you should be flattered! They are not allowed to sell to a young person or they loose their license to sell or get fined. Having a young friend with you is of no consequence, they cannot sell to an under age person.

Wal-Mart has this very strict policy about the purchase of alcoholic beverages. They card everybody, even someone that is 90 years old, very weird though.

That is bullcrap. That isnt even the law. Gimme a break

I worked at a grocery store for a while as a cashier and had to go through this Liquor Certification Training so that I process alcohol transactions. In the training i was told that i needed to see id from all who were there. when i asked why i was given a answer kind of like this: the company would be open to a lawsuit if i sold alcohol to minor and said minor caused an accident with injuries, damages, or death. obviously, cashiers are supposed to use commonsense when asking for id. meaning, that you usually wouldn't ask a 3 year old child, who just happens to be there as the mother buys a bottle of wine, for id.

her job is not worth the risk of selling to a minor, or even someone who is already clearly intoxicated. obviously someone can refuse to sell anyone alcohol for any reason. the person selling it is just as responsible as say a bartender would be for thier own customers safety and that of the world around us.

Totally weird. Great question fenwaygeorge!!!!!

happened to a friend of mine 2 weeks ago at a rite aid. she is 26, her sister is 18. they wouldn't sell her wine because her sister wasn't old enough.

i've had it happen, but have been carded and told that the other person that didn't have id couldn't touch the alcohol, pay for anything or carry it out. i was fine with that. sometimes i don't travel with my id if i am not driving and to prohibit my friends from getting what they're getting because of it makes no sense.
i assume store policy, really bad for biz if you can shop somewhere else w/o the hassle.
