Do you feel the UK drinking age should be lowered to 16?!

Question: I need opinions for a college essay!!!

In most other European countries the age is 16 or lower and there isn't much of a binge drinking problem as the UK. Other European's drink to savour the taste and enjoy whereas most British swallow it down as quick as possible. Do you think this could work for the UK too?

yes if it was legal maybe kids would drink in pubs and not be ou on the streets causing trouble. i think that is a good idea.

looking out onto my street corner last night...... thought it had been lowered to fourteen

It shldn't be lowered, it shld be extended to the age of 21.

No! And the way young people behave, 18 is too young.

No, there's something destructive in the British nature, lowering the age to 16 would just make it easier for small kids to get hold of alcohol. As for binge drinking - as I said, it's in our nature and that will never change.

well its 18 here in ireland too and that doesn't stop anyone!

Put up to 21 defo -

more problems otherwise -

No.

In my opinion the drinking age should be RAISED to 30.

No. What would be the point?

Children in early teens binge drink illegally anyway. Lowering the legal drinking age will not stop this.

There is a large cultural gulf between the British and Continental Europeans that cannot be bridged simply by lowerign the legal drinking age I'm sorry to say.

no

Age isn't the issue, it's quantity/availability/things for folk to do that should be debated. Young People will get "pissed" no matter what age you raise it to. There needs to be alternatives on offer.

No, in my opinion it should be raised to 21 like America.
I understand this doesnt stop the young people who drink on the streets etc but in my experience even most of the 18 year olds that i see out drinking in pubs where i live cannot do so sensibly.
They are so drunk they can barely stand and have no concept of moderation.

good god no,we have enough underage drinkers as it is.If we lowered it they would just get younger than they are now.

I think they should be putting alcohol into baby formula. There should ban on 'soft' drinks. It should be illegal to drive without a blood alcohol level of at least 0.05%. Pubs shouldn't be allowed to stop serving anyone unless they totally unconscious. They should stop methylating perfectly good spirit. They should remove all liquor tax and add a subsidy. Then and only then should they bring the legal age down to 16.

it should be banned totaly ,cause you guys cant handle it.

The legal age has nothing to do with it - the key reason we have so many issues is that we have no culture of introducing alcohol as acceptable at a young age so it becomes something you do to prove your individuality rather than as an enabler in social situations.
Changing the legal age for drinking would have NO effect at all on the issues with alcohol in this country - which by the way are nowhere near as bad as they are in Poland, the Slaves, germany etc etc.
Oh and I dont care what the age is in America - I have never been to a more repressed country in my life - the way the exert their civil liverty is by repressing everyone else's. You can't drink but you can buy a gun. What a load of cobblers.

Keep it at 18 or 17... it seems fine to me.

Knocking it down will open up more kids who drink and get wasted this isn't Spain, Portugal or any other country it's Britain. Maybe around 17 once they leave school it's okay.

Kicking it to 21 will ruin it for the 18-21 people and IMO they'd only obtain drinks it through someone else and do it on the street.

Absolutely not!!!!

Somewhere in there!! sounds like a good idea

Doesn`t matter if it`s lowered or not, kids will still drink at 16, if it is lowered in a few years time you`ll be wanting it lowered to 14 and so on, let`s just leave it as it is

no i lived in spain 4 5yrs i owned a bar the law there is 18 the spanish binge drink as much as the brits the only differance is the spanish dont go out till at least 11pm by whitch time the brits are almost legless and making fools of themselves then by 5am theres not a brit in sight and the spanish r legless

I think Germany is the only country in the EU which has 16 as the drinking age. Maybe belgium too...... maybe.
