What is the perfect first drink?!

Question: I'm a 38 year old guy, never had a drink before. What do you think would be the best thing to try when I have my first ever alcoholic drink?

I grew up having the watered down wine at the dinner table as a child and a little mulled wine for Christmas as a teen. I have never seen a member of my family "abuse" alcohol. I have taken other close friends to AA meetings.
If you are not broadening your palate then I really don't know why you should start drinking. I hope you are not just bending (no pun intended) to social pressure to start drinking.
I enjoy the way the alcohol carries complex flavors and complements food as with wine or beer, or just grabs your palate as in the case of a complex scotch or other liquor.
I don't care for these bar drinks. I think they are really just a vehicle for people who might be setting themselves up for dependency. I have also never had a bar drink that was really very interesting. The only exception I suppose would be a drink like a mint julep or something handed down for special occasions or Chatham Artillery Punch to commemorate some ancestor on their birthday.
If you intend to proceed I suggest you ask your friends to let you just really smell what they drink smells like. Ask them to pour just a splash of wine, beer, mead, or other alcohol in the bottom of a glass and then immerse yourself in the aromas. Then, once you have identified something interesting go and buy a really good bottle and occasionally taste your way into being familiar with it. Try to appreciate the craftsmanship of something fine and complex rather than deceiving yourself and getting lost in the alcoholic affect.
Peace

Mai Tai!! you won't taste the alcohol, and the alcohol is maybe the one thing that will put you off on your first try.

Or a white wine such as Riesling, Pinot Grigio or Alsace. Chilled.

Why bother? Most people your age are working on getting sober after having had they're lives ruined by alcohol. Be happy that such has not been the case for you.

Ha!, Man O Man, Go straight for the good stuff, Jack Daniels and Coke, with 2 ice cubes and your straight.

nothing goes down better than a good scotch

long island ice tea :)

water!

A whole bottle of Bacardi 151 or Everclear! Drink it quickly cos then it will have less to time to make you drunk :D

mojito ..dunnno how to spell it...it taste pretty good...not much alcohol

Do you want a wine or a mixed cocktail, or a beer? It depends on your own preferance.

I would suggest something along with your meal at a restaurant, like going to chilis with friends and ordering a margarita or a cocktail that strikes your fancy.
But if you would rather try a wine, I suggest a moscato (apply-white grape). I descovered Moscato while here in Italy. The taste of wine may put you off at first, but Moscato is very light and you can even find it "frizzant"- bubbly like a champagne so it is lighter on your tongue. If you try a wine you like but it is too strong for you, put an ice cube in your glass until you get used to the flavor. Obviously it is not the correct way to drink it, but, like coffee, you need to develop a tolerance for it.

Well, since your a guy, I would say beer, Smirnoff Ice maybe, but if you want something that you can stomach that taste good and sweet but still a masculine drink would be... southern comfort and seven up.

If you like a good wine try a mascato or reisling.
LOL kids love it, and it's Jesus' first miracle.

I would start w/ the Smirnoff Ice, if your buying from a store, alot of bars don't carry it.
But if your starting from a bar order the southern comfort and seven up. If you were a woman I'd suggest a daiquri.

You could always, Pop Bottles, and go straight for the good stuff, Dom Perignon, but you may never come back.

Are you celebrating St. Patricks day?

Sunburst...one part Tuaca, one part juice(not clear), 2 parts energy drink. It'll taste like a starburst candy depending on the juice, Tuaca can't get you THAT drunk even if your slammin' em back, and the energy drink will keep your hangover/sicktime from coming on too strong.

well matters how drunk your thinkin on gettin. jack daniels n coke for a drunk nite. grasshoppers, or sum white russians for a mellow nite. n if ur a NASCAR kinda guy then a good ol' beer, try miller, pabst blue ribbon, or for some beer with flavors n what not try samuel adams, they got tons of kinds of beer..ales are the dark beers. lagersare light. unless it might be a pale ale but dont worry about that unless u realy want to noe. oh n also. beer before liquor makes u sicker. n dontmixur dark alchohol with light alchohols until ur a seasoned vet.
P.S. if u drink a bottle of water and take some asprin before sleepin u wont usualy get a hangover. hangovers r from lack of hydration. beer is 90% water or so but they dehydrate you. and if ur alchohol says 'sour mash', that just means that the breweries leave the leftover from the previous batches in the mixers so they have a consistent taste throughout the years(like jim beam)

Definately a low alcohol liqueur or the like. I have never met anyone who has loved the taste of beer when they first have it (18 year old guys please dont feel the need to say how much you love beer to look tough...).

Try something like baileys and milk. I know it is girly but the best way to start drinking. Stay away from cocktails, spirits, wines and beers until you have had a few of these.

Beyond this try:

Kahlua and Coke
Cointreau, Lime & Soda
Amaretto and Coke
Baileys on Ice
Tia Maria and Coke
Tia Maria and Milk

then move onto:

Bourbon, Scotch or Rum and Coke.

When first having a beer if you dont like it try adding about 1oz. (30ml) of Lime cordial as it will take off the bitterness which is very overpowering when you first have it.

Experiment, have fun, and remember drinking isnt neccessarily about looking tough.

Yikes. Why start now? But if you must, I say do it right and pop open a bottle of really good Champagne to celebrate. Brut (which means "very dry") absolutely. Go for the best you can afford--Cristal or Dom would be great. If you can't afford those, head to a good wine store and talk to the owner/clerk about buying a great Brut Champagne for this odd occasion.(But seriously, why start drinking now?) BEFORE you take that drink, tho, grab some Emergen-C (available at most grocery stores and health food stores) and mix up one last nonalcoholic drink for yourself--it's a fizzy powder you mix with water, full of vitamins and minerals--will help with the hangover you're bound to experience.

a big bottle of JD's for real though

a bottle of apple vodka or a bottle of jd

Baileys Irish Cream....yummy : )

Since you are a adult with adult taste buds I would say good beer. What will be drinkable to you as an adult will be different than someone who started drinking at 15. A Belgian ale maybe. Those monks can do a really good job of making beer with none of the acquired taste flavours that make people dislike beer. Rochefort Trappistes anything.

Thats why you lived up to 38. Now you decieded to die early
