Bloodthinners cuomadin?!

Question:

Bloodthinners cuomadin?

I'm interested in the effects of the interaction with alcohal.

Answers:
The actual blood thinning effect of alcohol is over-rated. However, an alcoholic beverage can theoretically enhance the blood thinning effect of Coumadin by inhibiting the liver's ability to produce blood clotting proteins. That happens to be the way that Coumadin works, by inhibiting the Vitamin-K dependent formation of blood clotting factors by the liver.

If a person has been drinking in moderation on a consistent basis, say a glass of wine each night with dinner, then your Coumadin dosing and INR level will be stable.

If a person who does not drink alcohol suddenly has several drinks, the INR may be affected for a few days.

As with any diet and medication factors, it is important for anyone on Coumadin to try and stick to as much of a steady routine as possible so that the INR remains stable.

If there are changes in medication or diet, the INR may change and the physician will need to modify the Coumadin dose to compensate. As long as that change is maintained and things are once again stable and routine, then the new dose of Coumadin will maintain a stable INR once again.

Many people taking Coumadin are able to enjoy wine and beer, as long as it is in moderation and the intake is consistent on a day to day basis.

You get seriously effed up. And not necessarily in a good way. Two serious bloodthiners aren't really to be combined. Oh, and if you cut yourself, or get hit very hard, you very well might hemorrhage. Don't mix pills and alcohol.

I would 100%, definitely not mix the two. Bloodthinners like coumadin, etc. do exactly that, thin your blood, and so does alcohol. The combination could be lethal. A cut, or a fall could mean curtains or at least serious injury for anyone who tries to mix this type of medication with alcohol. DO NOT DO IT!!!
