Unless the pipes are old and the water comes out a nasty yellow color, it's generally safe. There are chemicals in the water to help purify it.

The problem comes in with outdoor fountains. As was said by another poster, animals go where they want. They don't know how to use the toilet... well, MOST of them don't. lol

Also, if people put their mouths on the spout, they're leaving their germs behind. Even letting the fountain run a for a moment or two doesn't erase the fact that someone put their mouth too close to the spout.

In those cases, you're definitely better off bringing a bottle of water with you..... if you can. Some schools won't let kids bring in water bottles, because some kid was a moron and decided to dump water all over the place.

The water is okay it's where you put your mouth to drink it that's the problem.

It is the same water that is coming into your home.

it tastes nasty, doesnt it?
what do you think

Its the fountain that can be gross. It would depend on the location of the fountain. Some places are great about cleaning them but some are not.

ewww, nasty! it's not so much the water, but the actual fountain! people spit in those, and put their mouths all the way on, let their dogs drink from them, etc..

You know in schools that the drinking fountain at schools are dirtier(bateria wise) than a toilet. I bring waterbottles from home and i bring them back and refill it at my house.

The delivery mechanism is the problem. If it is in a park, they have already proved that there is fecal bacteria on everything.
Birds, squirrels, etc. You can easily carry water with you these days. REI sells plastic bottles for hiking that are terrific. You can buy some with wide mouths that will accept ice cubes easily, and just leave them in your car for refreshment. This is much better than buying the throw aways.

not as dirty as licking the spill tray. have been tempted at my local bar before..
