Their system adjusts to the alchohol so it takes more to get them drunk, kind of like people who do drugs have to take more and more to get the effect they used to get with only a little. This is the body's defense to keep you from getting drunk.

They build up a tolerance.

Drinkers with a higher tolerance may have more alcohol dehydrogenase, an enzyme which helps to deprotonate the alcohol molecule. Men usually have a higher concentration of this enzyme than women.

Your first answerer is correct they build up a tolerance. this is why they say drinking and drugs are a gateway for more drugs and drinks, people are constantly looking to get higher and drunker until their bodies crash. (I am a casual drinker.. birthdays & holidays)

after awhile you just build up a tolerance.

cause we know what we are dealing with

Their tolerance level is higher

You build up a tolerance to it. When I started out I could only drink about one beer now I can drink a 12 pack before I'm really trashed. I'm a girl and only weigh 115 pounds. I can out drink a lot of guys I know.
