There are some regions in California where wine tasting is free....but NOT IN NAPA.
Napa wine tasting runs from $10 to $30 per person. Some of the smaller Calistoga wineries will charge only $5.

Tasting fees vary from $3-5 but tend to be waived if you purchase. Depending on the winery sometimes a charge may be higher based on tasting library wines. Have fun! Recommend Carneros Creek area, and Russian River in Sonoma.
I have run into tasting fees of from free up to $12. Usually $3 - $5.
I have not had a tasting fee waived with purchase.
