How do you tell if the asparagus in your fridge is still good?!

Question:

How do you tell if the asparagus in your fridge is still good?

I bought fresh asparagus a week ago and forgot it was in the bottom crisper.

Answers:
Do not wash asparagus before storing. Wash it just before using. To store, wrap in a paper towel and place in a plastic bag that is not airtight, or place upright in a jar or glass containing 1/2 inch of cold water.

No more than 3 to 5 days in the fridge.

If the tops are firm and not soggy then it's fine.

Ahh... Is asparagus really EVER good?

It should look crisp and smell fresh

It should still be firm. If it is limp, throw it out! Easy way to tell: hold the bunch by the cut end and shake it back and forth. If they move around like crazy they are probably bad.

how does the asparagas look?

If it's slimy than I'd toss it out.

If it still looks dry and still looks like asparagas, then it's good.

is it limp?

a week is pushing it, if the tops are still firm, and the bottoms are too dried out it might be ok. Also, if you hold it straight out, it shuoldn't bend

if its soft & mushy throw it out.

you have to ask the asparagus if its still good,,, if it answers then yo know its damn good if not then i say its dead!!

If you hold on to either end of the stalk and bend it, it will break at the point where the top is fresh and the bottom is woody, ( old ). Cook the tops, discard the bottoms of the stalk.

chop off the bases of them

put them in water, standing up, they should "unwilt"

works for celery too

you can do fun things with food coloring too

do you know asparagus is good for what

If it is limp, it is still good to eat. Soak in very cold water. Then break off the ends.
Next time when you get asparagus, stand it up in cold water,if you don't use it right away.

the tops have to be firm. if wilted toss
