Cigarettes vs. Alcohol?!

Question: I am a smoker and don't drink. I never smoke around kids and if someone has a problem with my smoking I accommodate. I am not saying cigarettes are good for you but my question is this.
Why are all the tax and commercials attacking the smoker when alcohol has been a problem also? Isn't it time to go after the liquor industry as harshly as the tobacco industry. The millions of lives every year that has been effected by alcohol is not an issue to forget. Ask anyone who goes to A.A. or their families.

Alcohol is a million times worse than cigarettes. Whole families have suffered because of one alcoholic in the family. We all know what happens when we drink too much.
And yes, alcohol should be taxed as cigarettes are.

Huh?

Yes alcohol advertising should be held to the same standard and have more restrictions. While they're at it they should decriminalize marijuana since it is a safe alternative to alcohol.

I think Alcahol should never be bothered or ciggeretts or chew it all should be accepted by everyone and that is my honest opinion.

some alcohol is good for u like a samll amout of red wine. and i dont think their is a good thing about smoking. but i think smokeing and drinking are bad.

u r veryyyyy RIGHT!!! I don't drink either... And when i read about all these stupid drunk drivers killing innocent ppl in car crashes ( and not themselves) in really pisses me of.. Evevry 1 is sooo against smokers but smokers can go in a car and not worry about takin some 1 else life... now a drunk should worry and shouldn't even drive... I agree with u 100%

Addiction to any drug - pot, opium, cigs, alcohol, caffeine, sugar, heroin - is harmful to self and society. I don't think addiction is good for anyone (and I am definitely addicted to my share of drugs!) Sounds like what you're running into is politics, though. I would say - just have grace towards people who are blind to their own addictions!

Cigarette companies add harsh chemicals to make them more addictive.
Careful, your kids look up to you and your cigarette addiction.

In limits Alcohol is good for you. Tobacco is bad for you no matter how much you smoke.

they do go after the liquor industry, but not being a drinker you have not noticed the increase in cost. they need to go after cell phone users especially those who talk and try to drive

If money spent on Alcohol and Cigarettes was used to pay for health care we would not need Clinton's health care program which we don't want

The liquor industry is being attacked. They both are. They also both create a lot of revenue. They are taxed like crazy and the government makes lots of money.
I work in the liquor industry and the liquor control board are constantly around ready to write tickets and intimidate bar owners and employees. There are very strict liquor laws in the state I live in.

First, as a non-smoker, let me thank you for your willingness to accomodate with your smoking.
Even though I have never met you, I appreciate it!

There are likely a number of factors, what follows is pure speculation on my part:
Tobacco farmers have been subsidized by government farm money in the past- this affords target visibility for lobbyists.
Alcohol producers have more than one crop they can turn to, and support agriculture with their purchases towards the end product. (supplementing the possible subsidy aspect if present)
Alcohol had a better lobby group.
Alcohol gets promoted as a "only hurting myself" issues- despite the traffic and abusive injuries that can result
Smoking is seen as causative in second hand smoke issues for more than just the smoker.
There may be issues of health care dollars towards the different personal issues of health related to each i.e. long term care for smokers with lung issues vs. when your liver craps you are basically done, or at least it is over in a shorter time.

So, I could be way out in the boonies on these, but they are part of what comes to mind for the issue you raised.

Your question is clear and true.
I have seen what excessive alcohol abuse can do to a person.
I agree with no doubt that it should be addressed equally if not intensely.

Cigarettes and alcohol are both addictive and self destructive. However alcohol is far more damaging to ones health and behaviour, many resulting in abuse to others, consequently many families and marriages have been destroyed and broken up over this evil substance.

I honestly hate both alcohol and smoking. There is no good reason to do either. You're right, there should be the same restrictions put on alcohol that cigarettes get. I personally believe alcohol is the worst of the two. Cigarettes won't affect a person's judgment where alcohol always affects it. That's far more dangerous when people have no inhibitions.

Hey I really agree with you on that. I am an alcoholic and can't touch it now, but do smoke (illegal hash) and prefer it to a hangover any day. My irritation is that if we all stopped smoking and drinking, everybody else would have to pay higher taxes, I certainly know I have paid and paid over years for the boozing and fags. I say legalise hash, no fights or violence with that, alcohol brings untold nightmare memories to me. But our Government won't do it as they are totally hypocritical. As for families, I am only now building the bridges with my boys and friends but boy is it worth it. xxxxxxx

Because it'll eventually will end costing the rest of us paying for the NHS treatments that smokers will need when older. But I agree with you that taxwise tobacco and alcohol should be equally taxed.

I'd like to politely remind people too that those who have lost dear ones through tobacco be it cancer or any other related illness, or are suffering because of it, have also their lifes affected as much as somebody who is related to an alcoholic.

IS BECAUSE THERE ARE MORE SMOKERS THAN DRINKERS IN THE WORLD MAYBE

OMG!! You have the same point of veiw as I!! I drink once in a blue moon, and smoke about 5 to 10 smokes a day!!! I smoke less, because of the increase in ciggerette prices, and drink more, when I do drink, because it's cheaper to drink for that one night, than it is to keep up the ciggerette habit!! Do ya see a pattern here with the reversal!! I guess that the law wants us all to drink more than we smoke!! I guess so that we will get into more trouble, so that the law can make allot more money from us!! It's all a money racket, and nothing by far to do with keeping us healthy!! The foods that we eat now and days, is more poisonise, than ciggerettes, and alcohol combined, so what the hell is the fuss with the ciggerettes killing people, when folks are dieing from Cancer, Heart failer, diabetes, high cholesterol, bladder problems/etc!! Our food indusrty, has more catogories to look out for, than just getting Cancer from smoke, and getting killed by drunk drivers!! All of these issues kill, and why is our Polotisions worries so much, to suck more money out of the everyone, that's why, from off of our own issues!! If they cared so much, then they would find a better solution, than ripping everyone off, so the Polotisions don't have to pay for these illegal imigrants, to work over here for cheap labor!! Our taxes are paying for this too!! That's why our ciggerette prices, and gas prices are going up, so that, you and I and every real American, pays for these imigrants to live here in our country. It's all about the one world Goverment!! Them polotisions feeds off of our problems!! The more problems we have, the more rich they get, and the more that we are controlled, and that's not freedom!! I tell it like it is, because I'm not blind, and have 20/20 vision, and see quite nicely!! Just how many taxes do we have now a day's, and I would like to know, where our tax dallors is really going!! I thought that this was a free country for us Americans, not the entire planet!! You'll see more on what I call the reversal!! Yes, I'm a fieasty one in person, and I'll always fight for my rights, and dare for some imigrant to take my place in my own country!! Math will crack any system, do your Math, and unlock the truth!! The Difference is everywhere you turn, and nothing adds up any more!! I don't follow what the government wants me to do, that's for damn sure!! I do what's right, and dare those suckers to make me do something that is wrong, or I don't want to really do!! If you want to smoke, then get out thier and fight!! Fight, Fight, Fight!! Even good people can start a war!! That does not make us bad people, that's what this country was founded by!! Don't let the government brain wash you, and fill your haed with a bunch of lies!! Thier talk is so damn cheap, and I wish they would do something, besides slowly killing our real American people!! If anyone fights in a war and dies, they really live forever, because they faught for what they believe in!! This is the answer to your question, and the after Math, of why it's happening!!

Hey guess what I don't blow beer in your face so.. No its no the same

that's because when we smoke other people have no choice but to inhale our smoke but when we drink we not sharing the alcohol with nobody but ourselves

I agree. There is not alot of commercials talking about the negative effects of alcohol. There were some commercials encouraging people to have designated drivers.I didn't see anything on the negative impact alcohol abuse has on families and roadways. They say don't do it, but there isn't any other indication of consequences besides, you can go to jail.

you choose to smoke but that affects all around you, drinking only affects you, depending i suppose on how you handle your drink.

Well Alcohol only affects the person drinking it. Smoking affects the whole environment and people around you.
