Why do they put rock salt on the rims of margaritas?!

Question:

Why do they put rock salt on the rims of margaritas?

people dont eat it do they?

Answers:
I don't think it's rock salt, I think it is Kosher or sea salt... and a little salt with tequila is actually quite tasty... a lot of garnishes on alcoholic drinks are not just for taste but also the aesthetic quality, which means it helps it look good. But I make my own margaritas at home and i like to rim the glass with salt.

Because it complements the flavor of the margarita.

It goes hand in hand with tequila, which is the main component of a margarita. When doing a shot a lot of people lick salt, drink the tequila and suck a wedge of lime.

It is part of the recipe. It compliments the sour taste of the MArgarita

Tell me how they drink it
can't avoid the salt can you.
So it must have to do with the LIME juice.
Right because every one loves tequila.
The most sour **it > oh well my opinion

My aunt from Texas says that in a real margarita, you don't put any salt on the glass, that people only do it to mask the taste when they use cheap tequila. She only uses 100% agave tequila, not something adulterated like Jose Cuervo.

I don't know if that's true or not, but her margaritas sure are tasty!
