Well it's doesn't really slow it down, it just keeps you more hydrated and prevents the dehydration of the alcohol. It also makes you go to to the bathroom more often and allows yo to release the alcohol.

yes, but only if you drink the alcohol, then drink some water. but if you're already drunk, the water will make you more drunk on the Breathalyzer.

YES- but the reason is it slows you down and keeps you fuller so you order less drinks. Some people drink one glass of beer and one glass of water, and don't order another until the water is downed also.

It is not that water prevents getting drunk -no chemistry just discipline to prevent over drinking.

Drinking water does not slow down the rate at which a person becomes "impaired". As stated before, the only thing it really does is keep you hydrated. However, as also stated above, eating does slow down the rate that alcohol is absorbed into the body. One thing there though, keep in mind that alcohol doesn't have to be digested through the stomach and intestines like other foods or drinks - alcohol is absorbed into the tissues, so starting with your mouth, you're getting drunk. But there are certain kinds of of foods that work better than others. If you're going to be drinking, you want to eat greasy foods like burgers and fries or something like that. That being said, although the grease will slow down the absorption of alcohol it won't negate it - that is, you're still going to get drunk. And once you're drunk there is nothing, and I mean NOTHING that will sober you up but T-I-M-E. Not coffee, not water, not pills or a shower, once the alcohol is in your body, it simply has to run it's course. It takes the body about two hours to "burn off" somewhere around 5 or 6 ounces of alcohol (I forget which one); so think about that please next time you put that glass to your lips.
