From the answers so far, you lot need to get out more :-D
Not sure what you mean by international British bitters, there are some British breweries that exchange with the USA, Hogs Back brewey in Tongham Surrey have had representation at beer festivals in the past.
There is a distrubutor called Bierlijn who take British bottled ales to Belguim and Holand and brings back draft and European beers to the UK (he supplies a number of CAMRA beer festivals).
Also when visiting Florence, Charles Wells (now Wells and Young's) had about 6 "pubs" in the area, where they export a stronger version of Bombardier (served under gas).
Typically a strong beer would be between 5% and 6% on draft.
The strong bitters do start to get towards Barley Wine as you get towards the 10%ers.
However there are Fullers Golden Pride or the Vintage Ale, bit around 8.5% or 9% and available at Christmas time as a polypin if you are lucky enough to find it on in a Fuller house.
Something like www ratebeer com is a interesting website where beers are given score by the public, and has a huge database of global ales and information.
My personal recomendations would be Triple fff Pressed Rat and Warthog (dark mild - the best beer in the whole wide world), then closely behind; Hop Back Entire Stout, B&T Edwin Taylors Stout, Porter Porter, Young's Winter Warmer also their Chocolate Stout, and recently discovered JW King Stout (that tasted like an old ash tray - rich and smokey).
As you can see they are mostly dark, and technically not a bitter?
Some days it would just come down to the beer in the glass in front out you.
All of the above is snippet of a personal view and subjective, could go on for hours, however, hope this helps!
I would personally recommend Sussex bitter, if you can find it.
marstons pedigree is a great beer
Ferrets Firkin.... Yes it is a real bitter.
IPA
Newcastle Brown
Shops own brands
From your local brewery if you have one
In Australia there is Victoria Bitter (VB).
In the States, IPA's are much more popular, although one can find some tasty ESB's at times.
Can't think of any to recommend off the top of my head.
Asda's own brand bitters are worth a try
one of the best english real ales is 'old peculiar'
