If I were you, I would start with a kit, this allows you to concentrate on the basics, sanitation, the do's and don'ts. Many kits include everything you need in pre-measured packets, they even number each one and include directions that describe what you see going on at each stage and when to add each packet.
This is true for wine, not quiet so true for beer. As time goes on you will learn how to alter the kits to suit your taste, how to sweeten, blend, even control the amount of alcohol.
A good site is eckraus.com they include loads of information for free, and offer many kits, ingredients, and even have a monthly newsletter that will give you great suggestions.

I've been making beer for 30 years, and wine for two or three, just wish I had started with wine first, I would have some great wines by now and would have probably made a better beer both will bring you lots of enjoyment .

researched making wine, it takes a BUNCH of grapes! so, we got a home brewing kit called Mr. Beer and made a small keg of our own beer! It took awhile, but was relatively easy! Search for Mr. Beer's website and you'll see what I mean, the hardest part of it was making sure everything was clean before using it! We had a beer tasting party when it was done, and everyone thought we were so talented!
If your making it for yourself, beer is easier. Like the other person who answered this "Mr. Beer" is a good option, but they have tons of brewing kits depending on the type of beer you like. Now, if you want to profit, wine is the way to go. With that profit, comes dedication, time, property, and, of course, grapes. Where you own the property is a HUGE part of it. I've tasted wines from Texas, Ohio, Georgia, Cali, Austrailia, France, and Michigan. You would have to research what grapes do better where. As far as fermentation, more research. I will tell you this though, if you do enough work, it'll be worth it. There's a little old lady with a small vineyard in Cali, who's single bottle of wine sells for over $2000. I don't know of anyone who has ever won any prizes in a homebrew competition using Mister Beer.
it is a very big process. have you been to France or Italy
