Salt Lake City??!

Question: I will be living in Salt Lake City for 3 months for work and was wondering what there is to do there? I am over 21, but I know they have some pretty crazy drinking laws that I just dont really understand? Any help with things to do and the drinking laws would be appreciated!

I used to go skiing near there a lot and the liquor laws there are just stupid. Probably the most bs liquor laws in the country. lol

You can go to a bar or club just like any place else but you have to be a "member". It is so stupid because all you do is "join" the club on the spot for a few dollars.

The other thing is that in stores you can only get 3.2% beer and nothing stronger. If you want something stronger not in a bar or club then you have to go to a state run liquor store which are closed on Sundays and some holidays and are usually only open until 10 pm. So if you want to drink at home get your supplies early. This is one of the most hypocritical laws I have ever heard of! The State government is "against" drinking but if you choose to drink THEY are the ones selling it to you! The liquor stores are state run! In other words they are saying "don't drink" but oh by the way if you want to we will be glad to make tax money if you do! Total bs!

Other bs there is no such thing as a double so the drinks you get are very weak. All this does is cause people to drink more of them. lol Also, you can only have on drink per person on the table at any given time. Make sure you finish your drink before you order another one.

More stupidity. No dancing after 2 am! Total rubish! lol

Oh yeah at a restaurant you HAVE to order food with your drink. If you do not order at least some kind of food you are not allowed to get a drink. So people order an order of chips and get their drink. lol I can't see how this is legal? How can a state government mandate that you buy food, even if you are not hungry/don't want any?

Anywho, Utah like the bible belt is very strict.

The bottom line is people do whatever they want the stupid state just makes you jump through hoops is all.

I would never live there because I value freedom way too much.

your 21 go for it hoo rah

I worked there for several months last year...

The drinking laws loosened up a lot there, when they had the Olympics... but there are still some restrictions on 'plain ole bars' - for many, you have to be a member. Got 5 dollars? you can be a member for a week! :)

Get ready for a LOT of outdoor activities! Skiing from November to April/May; desert hiking; thousands of miles of bike, hike, and ATV trails. Race a car at the Bonneville Salt Flats, take a zip-line ride at a ski area, you can have a lot of fun and not see a bottle of booze at all!

You have my sympathy. I spent 2 years there.

It's not ALL bad. The Mormon Tabernacle is the best concert hall I have ever been in, acoustically, and there are no bad seats in the house.

If you want to get a decent cup of coffee, you have to go to a Mexican restaurant.

The University of Utah sometimes has some good cultural events.

The scenery is spectacular, if you like dry landscapes.
