Question: for someone who does not want to spend a lot of money but wants to drink a bit, what is a drink that tastes kind of good but is not too expensive?

Mixed drinks... White Russians, Whiskey Sours using well liquor.

Beers... PBR, Samuel Adams, Guinness, Goose Island... just to name a few.

It might help if you gave a price range, but I'll just assume that you want to spend as little as possible. A 1.75 of "better" bottom shelf whiskey like Old Crow is pretty decent tasting and is very economical at ~$15 + the cost of mixer (soda). A step up from that would be a slightly better quality whiskey or Cruzan Dark rum.

Either some generic mixing alcohol, or more specifically vodka. You can find vodka for insanely cheap and it's basically the tofu of booze, it tastes like whatever you mix it with. It's at least drinkable with nearly any juice and quite often rather tasty.
