Is it expensive to brew your own beer?!

Question: The cost for equipment and effort to brew a beer like bud/miller/coors etc is not going to be worth it and you likely will not be as satisfied with your results until you have become a seasoned home brewer. That being said if you enjoy craft beers then it is much cheaper and a much better sense of pride behind drinking something that you have made! You will have initial setup costs of around 150-200 $$ and then your looking at around 20-40 for a 5 gallon batch(2 cases) which is much cheaper than you can buy craft beer for. Brewing beer is a hobby. There is a lot of work behind it and if you are looking to brew beer just to save money your probably better off not. IF you are looking for a new and exciting hobby then GO FOR IT! Find a local homebrew store and get started! If you can find a homebrew club in your area I'm sure they will show you the ropes before you get started!

My father in law brews his own and he showed me one time how much the beer would have cost in the store vs how much he paid and it was 200-300 dollars cheaper to brew a month but he made kegs so

Yes. You can buy beer for less than brewing your own. Homebrewed beer is MUCH better than any cheap beer you can buy, though.

Bert

Bert, that is plain BULLSPIT. I brew constantly, and for $23 I can brew 2 cases worth of beer that is consistently better than most anything that can be bought. How is that more expensive? Sure, it costs $100 to buy the equipment, but seriously the price levels out after 2-3 months of brewing. Get your facts straight homie. My price per bottle of beer is 1/2 the cost of beer ON SALE at the store.

Only in brain cells.

Even with small quantities (eg. 1 gallon) and some fancy ingredients for speciality beers, electric/ gas etc. I average about 50 pence a pint.

The setup isn't cheap. It will cost you about $120-$140 to get started.

After that it all depends on what kind of beer you drink... If you normally drink $12 cases then... No it isn't cheap.

If you save your used (non-screw top) bottles and wash them... It will cost you anywhere from $30ish to $60is to brew two cases of beer. That to me doesn't sound that bad... I spend as much as $15 on a six pack and sometimes just that on a single 12oz bottle.

My last order including all ingredients yeast, malt and flavor agents for 1 1/2 batches of beer (I over ordered on my pilsner malt), sanitizer, caps, new grain bags and shipping cost me $90. Divide that by 54 bottles you get out of a 5 gallon brew and it is about $1.66 a bottle. Not bad if you ask me.

I drink a lot and it's cheaper for me to buy milwakeez beast, than to brew my favorite brews which are high in ingredients and flaforz. I can brew mild brew cheaply, but it still takes time and effort. Remember, Time is money

some people say it's not and some say yes.to i think it's not

My last batch (a molasses pale ale) ended up costing me about $1 per bottle, for 56 bottles.

Is that expensive? You can get Keystone for just under $.50 a can. You can go to a club in the city and get a bottle of Bud Light for $6. During happy hour, I can get a pint of any one of 69 beers for $2.50 At the liquor store I can but a six-pack of my favorite craft beer for around $1.50 a bottle.

I don't do it to save money, I do it for a good hobby... although the fact that it saves me money on beer does make me feel good.

After the initial cost of the brewing equipment you can expect to pay about $20-$30(as much as $40 if you are making beer from a kit) for the ingredients to make a 5 gallon batch of brew.
