Good Whiskey?!

Question: I'm an avid beer drinker and was thinking about getting into whiskey a little more, anyone like to suggest a good whiskey.

I don't usually spend more than $20 for a bottle, and my favorites in that price range are Dickel 12 and Beam Black. I personally like those about as much as most more expensive (<$30) whiskeys, so they are a pretty good value. If money is no object, then Van Winkle Special Reserve is superb at about $45. If you're curious to know what the better bottom shelf whiskeys are, availability of some brands is regional, but the best in my area is probably Old Crow at $14 - $16 for a 1.75. Crown Royal is swill and is among the most overpriced liquors in existence. It's basically the whisk(e)y for people who don't like whiskey. I dislike Canadian whisky in general. Jack Daniels is also incredibly average and overpriced.

Crown Royal
Jameson
Dewars

CC
Canadian club
OH Canada ....

Hey Buddy

First of all I would to correct the guy with the first answer. He mention Dewars as a whiskey, which is totally incorrect. Dewars is a Scotch.

Secondly, to the second guy i would like to correct him too, who mention CC, and Canadian Club, they're both exactly the same thing. CC is just a short way of saying Canadian Club.

There are so many great whiskey out there. You can't never go wrong with Jack Daniels. Jack Daniels also have a higher version which is totally smooth called JD Single Barrel. Another suggestion is Crown Royal Special Reserve, which is another smoother than the regular Crown Royal.

My personal favorite is Woodford Reserve, which is a Bourbon Whiskey. Very nice smooth taste with a hint of the Oak. Very smoky, and warm when it runs down.

Good Luck

Cheers.

ya I'm first correcting a corrected answer. there is bourbon whiskey and there is Scotch whiskey.
bartender of resort bar 7 years.....

scotch id say oban or macallan

I will offer a little input on bourbon whiskey, my favorite.

First, there are actually two types of bourbon: ‘Ryed’ and ‘Wheated.’ A true bourbon drinker will form an undying allegiance for one or the other. But if you ask most salespeople in liquor stores about ryed and wheated bourbons, they will most often be clueless about the two types.

Bourbon must be at least 51% corn. Generally 65% - 75% corn is used, together with about 10% barley and the balance will be either rye or wheat.

When the balance is rye, the bourbon is known as a ‘ryed bourbon.’
Ryed bourbons are very bold and spicy.

When the balance is wheat, the bourbon is known as a ‘wheated bourbon.’

Wheated bourbons are generally sweeter, nuttier, mellow and easy to drink. The distillers claim the difference between the two bourbons is like the difference between wheat bread and rye bread.

Wheated bourbons are in the minority but Makers Mark, W.L. Weller, Rip Van Winkle, Old Fitzgerald, Rebel Yell, Cabin Still and David Nicholson 1843 are some of them if not most of them.

Personally, I think Makers Mark is overpriced and overrated. The red blob of wax on the bottle cap/neck is a great marketing gimmick / ploy but you will also note, or not note, any age or aging information on a bottle of Maker’s Mark, i.e., it is rushed to market. My personal favorite in the wheated bourbons is Weller, most notably their 12Year Old. It runs about $21-$23 a bottle. Is Weller 12 YO absolutely the best bourbon? NO but it ranks up there in my opinion. Consumer Reports probably would call Weller 12 YO a ‘BEST VALUE.’ Personally, $30 is my limit for a bottle of hooch. Mechanic, above me, mentioned the ‘wheated’ Van Winkle Special Reserve, very good but very pricey.

Aside from this, BOURBON is as American as baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet……………..

Bourbon is the official spirit of the United States by Act of Congress. In 1964, a congressional resolution protected the term "Bourbon" and only since then has the product been defined.
