What type of alcohol should a home bar have?!

Question: I've been thinking about getting my boyfriend some (relatively) good alcohol for his collection. He really likes to mix drinks, but has a limited selection to choose from (vodka, amaretto, southern comfort). What are some other types of alcohol that would be good to get him?

Wow, that really is a limited selection.

I just think he should stock up on a lot more items: Rum, Gin, Tequila, Bailey's, Jagermeister, Bourbon, Cura?ao (any colour), Southern Comfort, Grand Marnier or Cointreau, various Schnapps (sour apple pucker, butterscotch, peppermint, etc. ) Sweet & Dry Vermouth, Whisk(e)y, a few reds, a few whites, a blush, a port, sparkling wine or champagne and beer.

Now myself, I am a sucker for bar tools. Restaurant supply stores are like toy stores for me. Everything is just so bright & shiny. I have pourers for my bottles, a jigger (just in case, I can't recall the last I've used it since I have the pourers), a shaker, mixing glass, strainer, rimmer, 6 compartment tray for fruit, mortar & pestle, bitters, blender, paring knife, champagne stopper, vac-u-vin, corkscrew, ice bucket, bottle opener, wine key.

I really like infusing alcohol, too. So I save my empty bottles to make up creative concoctions. Spring is coming up, I'm thinking lemon/basil vodka & pineapple/cilantro tequila.

captain (spiced rum), tequila,and whiskey.....

Get him what he likes most and what some of your friends drink if you have them over.

Jager
a good tequila like Patron or 1800.
Jack Daniels, Wild Turkey, Crown Royal, Seagram's 7, and Grey Goose or Absolute vodka if he likes hard liquor mixed with a soda like Coke or Sprite or Dr pepper.
If he likes to try sweeter mixed drinks, then you may want to get some peach schnapps, and Razzmatazz, Blue Curacao, and melon liqueur. With those you may want to keep some juices on hand too- such as orange juice, cranberry juice and pineapple juice.
Also you can add red bull and grenadine, fresh limes and lemons.

tequilla and coke. Tequilla and redbull. Jagermeister

Grey Goose Vodka can be mix with Cranbery, Malibu with Pineapple, Hipnotic with Vodka, Patron. Margarita Mix, etc

glenfidditch (don't know how to spell it) but it's a fantastic scotch.

grenadine is in a lot of drinks

rum of any sort for mixing

a good gin, like hendricks

kahlua/creme de cocoa is in all of the chocolatey drinks, baileys

rum and vodka

For entertaining, I agree with Elizabeth about whiskey & rum (original, spiced or flavored).

Of course you should add your own preferences since you will likely be your home bar's main customer. :-) For example, we like Malibu (coconut rum, good for pina coladas) and Midori (melon liquor) sours... my wife likes tequilla (for margaritas), while I prefer gin (with sprite).

If you really just want to experiment, buy the mini-bottles (the size you'd get if you were on an airline flight) before plunking down $20+ for a lot of something you may not even like. You could try drinks at a bar too, but that gets expensive quickly too.

Cheers!

I found an article for you addressing your exact question. It's from a good website and it also includes bar accessories you may want to pick up. I hope this helps you!!
