Red is the most basic one to find at gas stations, usually cheap too, that's why you see them in movies. All the college parties I used to go to would have red SOLO cups lying around to drink from or play beer pong with.

Solo cup uk too:

company named solo sells "party cups" usually red blue or yellow. they are cheap

Because we are more environmentally conscious and realize that Styrofoam is one of the least biodegradable elements known to cup manufacturers.

GIN said it best... that is what they sell at the stores. i get the white ones.. cheaper..

red cups arejust synonymous with party!!

Idk but im drinking whiskey and sprite out of a red plastic cup right now and it tastes pretty damn good!

SOLO isn't popular in UK? That's freakin weird. In US we have SOLO "keg cups" which hold about 16 ounces, maybe more, and are primarily used for beer out of a keg at a house party or a bbq. They're cheap, durable, and recyclable, which I think is why they are so popular. You guys put beer in styrophone? The is weird.

Well, always is kind of a dangerous word to use in this case, as I can think of many movies where alcoholic drinks are served in other containers, including proper cocktail glasses.

As for when the red cups are in use, they are simply a cheap and affordable way to serve drinks to large numbers of guests. Using them means not having to worry about things such as keeping a large number of real glass or crystal glasses in stock or the possibility of glasses being broken during the party. When you are finished, you can just throw them away instead of cleaning and storing them. They are also considerably more environmentally conscious than using white styrofoam cups, which are traditionally associated with hot drinks and coffee instead of alcohol.

The red color is really an arbitrary point. Many companies manufacture the glasses in this color, among others. In my own experience, I've actually seen more bright blue glasses in use at parties, including my own.

I guess it's just the way it is.

I'm American and in my family we use those cups a lot--when we have a party or with pizza or on a picnic or when the regular glasses are all in the dishwasher. We don't just use them for alcoholic drinks, either. I like them a lot because they are 16 ounces, so they hold an entire standard 12-ounce can of soda and some ice. They are just the cheap cups you get at any grocery store here. The white styrofoam cups you're talking about are what we use for hot drinks like hot chocolate and coffee.
