I would say no, but I suppose it depends on the crowd. That's all that some people like to do for fun.

Some people think you do, but I feel sorry for them. Alcohol has become a neccesity at many parties, but I think that if the people drinking at those parties tried having fun without the alcohol, perhaps with a different group of friends, they would find that you can have an equally fun and certainly more memorable experience.

I think for many people .. especially college age .. it's necessary to have alcohol. I like having drinks when I'm at a party -- especially if I don't know very many people. I'm pretty shy, so it's easier to meet people when I my inhibitions are lowered.
In my younger days before I knew better I thought having drinks was the only way to party.... until I lost my sister to a drunken driver.
That very night as our family gathered I was still under the influence and swore to God not one drop of alcohol would ever pass my lips again.
Does that mean it's wrong? No. It just means I could never live with myself should the roles be reversed and I was the one who took someones loved one for the sake of "having fun".
Now I take my Diet Coke's for beverage and have just as much fun plus I can remember the fun we had.

If you're at a party with friends it's not necessary it's just courteous for the host to serve alcohol. It is up to the guest whether they want to drink and how much.
If you are at a party where you don't know anyone or many people alcohol is a necessity and a common bond. You can always strike up a conversation with a stranger about their alcohol preferences and then move on to other topics.
The rub comes when you are at a party where you don't know anyone and you don't drink at all. People like this usually choose not to attend said party and wonder if alcohol is necessary to have a good time.
