Why does water have an expiration date?!

Question: Does it spoil?

Answers: Does it spoil?

i opened a old bottled water in the store once and it had like slimy half squished worms around the opening i almost threw up.the lady read the date and it was really old so im sure thats why.

I guess sitting on the shelves in a plastic bottle over a period of time, wouldn't be healthy for us to drink* Not sure of the exact reason but that would be my guess.* It would build up the toxins ...

Expiration Dates on Bottled Water
Here are opinions and answers from WikiAnswerers:

There is a chance that over time (years), the container could cause the water to have a different taste. There is much more information at the website in the Links section.

There are two main types of sterilization that all food and drink manufacturers use. The first is the use of peracetic acid that gives an instant kill to most pathogens (bugs that make you ill). The second is the use of steam. Holding a steam temperature of above 120 degrees in the product line for 15 minutes will kill virtually all pathogens. However, some bacteria form spores which are virtually indestructible and can last for millions of years. The only way to make totally sterile drinks would be to irradiate them, which wouldn't make them radioactive, but would make them cost a great deal of money to produce. Thus, the manufacturer cannot guarantee that their product is free of pathogens and gives it a 'use by' to minimize their liability. Packaging deterioration is the other reason for the "Best By" Date.
Please do not make the mistake of thinking that "Bottled Water" means pure, sterile, perfect water. It may surprise you to know that there is very little regulation concerning 'bottled water'. For example, it is common practise to label the bottle with such things as " Spring Water" or "Mountain fresh" while the water is actually taken directly from municipal sources! Look for yourself at the fine print and see.

The water itself does not spoil, but the chemicals in the plastic can seep out making the water taste funny and possibly make you sick. I say possibly because I haven't seen any studies proving that it will for sure.
So always try to consume your water soon after you buy it otherwise it will begin to taste funny.
A glass bottle of water will essentially never "spoil"

This will depend on what type of water you are talking about. Generally spring water have an expiry date because contrary to popular believe, untreated spring water can have bateria, fungal content which treat water such as sparkling flavoured water does not.
Depending on the jurisdiction and health and food guidelines, it may be compulsory to have a set expiry or best before date on all food items.

It does not spoil, it gets stale.

It is mostly there for taste purposes. Over time the water will become flat/stale and be distasteful to most people. There is an extremely small chance that chemicals from the bottle can seep into the water... and by extremely small I'd be more concerned about aliens beaming your water bottles onto their ships and altering them to taste like dog poo.

Will the expired water hurt you? No, there is little chance of it. If you are in a survival scenario and you need to drink the water... or any found water for that matter make sure that you have iodine drops with you. One to two drops per gallon is sufficient to kill most things that can harm you.

It doesn't spoil but the F.D.A demands expiration dates and the containers can break down over time.

The Muse

Because the minerals will expire on that date! lol.
