Hof is a city in germany known for strong beer

No. A "hof" is like a courtyard. Many farm houses have a "hof".

When i was in germany we always called them pubs, but the german word for bar is stab

we called it Germans bars

As written above, Hof means courtyard.However, some restaurants are actually called like that, e.g. Hackescher Hof in Berlin.There might also be some bars called like that, but Hof suggests sth. more classy, so it'd be uncommon.
