Barrel samples?!

Question:

Barrel samples?

I've been reading some of the barrel tasting notes of Bordeaux 2006. I've always wondered how the chateau decides which barrels to use for the barrel tasting blend that is presented to the critics the spring following harvest. Is there any rule that says the preliminary blend has to at least approximate the final blend that will eventually go into bottle 2 years later?

Actually the certified people for doing these taste the different productions, (depending on the region, grape, year, etc), and make a mix of it, normally the european wines are a mix of various varieties of grapes, and there are different regulations for each country, but normally the european wines just add the region where its produced because its what matter most to them, the quality of the wine, but normally any wine has a mix between younger and older productions for getting to the final product that they bottle

This depends on whether the Wine in question is to be a "Vintage" wine - and if so - both wines must be harvested in the same year.

or

Whether it is just a "Blend" where it doesn't make any difference. -

or Whether it has to meet any particular "regional" requirements that would limit the amount of either the preliminary or the final blend!
