How old are you when you start going to bars and clubs in america?!

Question:

How old are you when you start going to bars and clubs in america?

Does everyone wait until they are 21 or do you go earlier? Are clubs very strict when it comes to ID? I'm 19 (20 in a few months) and looking to go to america in the summer, but i only look about 17-18, and i'm just wandering how hard it will for me to get in? What forms of ID do they ask for? Can you get away with blag ID's?
By the way i'm male.

In the UK most girls start going out when there about 14 and lads about 15-16 depending on how old they look. In the US if you look young do you really have to wait until your 21?

Answers:
In order to be served alcohol in the US, a person has to be 21. Typically they require a state issued ID or driver's license (or passport for foreign visitors). Laws vary from state to state on how old one has to be to go into the bar/pub/club. Some allow those under 21 to go inside but may be restricted to certain areas. Other places might be 21 and over after a certain time (9 p.m.). Do you know someone in the state you'll be visiting whom you can ask?
