Your basic choices:
Vodka- basically anything over $25 will be decent or at least look decent.
Gin- Same with Vodka
Rum- Same with Vodka
Tequila- Need to spend a little more here, over $30 should be fine.
Whiskey- Same, going to have spend a little more here as well.

Pretty much prices are fixed. There are occasional sales, but rarely. Look for glass bottles and ask the person in the liquor store for any questions!

Buy something you know - nonalcohol. It will seem more genuine!

I don't know where you're from but most places have generally the same prices on liquor and there is no bargaining. You would need to know what kind of liquor your relative likes, for instance .. vodkas, rums, whiskeys, etc ? Then you can find out the good brands and pick something from there.

first and foremost you should be of legal age!!!

you should know first what type of liquor your relative drinks.

then when you go to the liquor shop you can always ask the seller for his/her suggested choice and tell him/her your price range.

happy liquor buying =)

For one don't drink.

find out what they like, if someone got me a bottle of vodka id just give it away, but if they gave me whiskey they'd be my best friend

I go to BevMo to buy liquor. I think you just have to know their tastes before buying. I like blackberry brandy. My hubby likes hennessy.
