Discrimination at Pete's Liquor Bucket?!

Question:

Discrimination at Pete's Liquor Bucket?

I have been going to Pete's Liquor Bucket in Merrillville Indiana for almost a decade. This year Pete sold the store to two Indian Gentlemen. They kept all the people that worked there before, and made the store looked very nice. Last week I was there shopping for a new wine to take to a luncheon with girls from work. Sharon- Pete's sister that still work there- said hi and we started to talk. She told me that the two Indian gentlemen do not like women and they work them harder than the males. I ask her why and she said it is their culture. In India women are second class citizens. Is this true or is this an isolated case?
Should I stop patronizing the store?

Answers:
I work at Pete's and I feel your question is a little suspicious. First, the two owners are great guys and they treat everyone very well. Moreover, what does it have anything to do with you finding great deals at Pete's? Finally, if it was so bad for the women why do they still work there? Sharon would not say such a thing. She works hard because that just how she is.

I believe that your background information to your question is a bit of imagination and a little touch of gossip.

while this custom does suck, women in india are treated quite badly, depending on their elders up bringing ,most are not allowed to show their faces or beauty in public, andas a rule, they are to walk 3 paces behind their master (husband) i would not stop going to the store unless it made things worse on your friend or you.

Subordinate is the word for the relationship of women to men in some cultures. Does she KNOW they are indian (from India) or they could be mid eastern- doesn't matter, both cultures view womens role almost the same, which I don't think has anything to do with like or dislike. Roles are clearly defined and it isn't common to cross the line.
No, I would not stop going to the store, but maybe Sharon can explain to the new owners that she isn't a member of that culture and could they please recognize that she isn't used to being treated that way.
