Can I put wine from a wine kit into beer bottles and cap them for storage?!

Question: I drink a good bit of wine. Unfortunately, I recently took many bottles to the recycle center at the wally mart. Last time I went to the recycle center, I asked if they had any wine bottles that they could give me. They told me they weren't allowed to give them out! I'm not giving them out anymore to wally mart either. If people really cared about the environment they would enourage re-using over recycling. I hate to buy bottles and have them shipped 100 miles from Austin, the nearest brewing supply store when my neighborhood alone probably puts that many in the trash can. I do have a lot of beer bottles. I also have a capper and bottle caps. I'd like to know if bottling wine in beer bottles is advisable, or any other ideas for obtaining cheap or free wine bottles. I have already asked my relatives to save them. I do have plenty of beer bottles. Thanks.

It should work.

Store them upright so there is not wine in costant contact with the cap. Wine is a lot more acidic than beer so it is not worth risking having the coating on the cap wear off.

you should just buy some cheap empty bottles

its better than risking ruining your wine

Not sure, but there must be a good reason that most wine comes in clear glass bottles, & Beer comes in dark bottles.

I doubt it would ruin your wine, but it might not be the best thing either. Try talking to local restaurants and bars to see if they would be willing to set aside their used bottles for you. I get mine from catering companies, for some events they will go through hundreds of bottles of wine a night and are usually happy that I take some off their hands, its less they have to throw away(plus this way I get bottles that actually match)..

I frequently use Grosch and other swing-top bottles for wine when I have an odd amount after home-vinting. Try asking friends to save their empties for you and ask at a restaurant if you can have some of their empties. Champagne bottles can be used too and some but not all of them will take a beer/soda cap.
