Well go with Patron or Don Julio. Friends don't let friends drink cuervo. That famous gold of cuervo gold comes from food coloring as opposed to aging. Sauza is good for cheap tequila. If looking for taste, look for 100% blue agave.
Jose Cuervo Gold and Tessoro are the best under $40.00 per bottle.
Mezcal and Quervo! (Not sure about the spelling on either!)

my favorite Tequila is Tequila Rose. it's got the kick of tequila but the taste of Strawberrys... it's kind of a "girly" drink but VERY good for shots!
really you should ask which brands arent under 40 bucks. Patron would be one.
My favorite is Casa Noble Crystal... for sipping more than for shots
...but there are so many under $40
