Depends on your taste, but good stores will list a wine's "score" (usually from either Wine Spectator or Wine Advocate). A score of 83-89 is a good bet. 90 or over is very good. If you want to try different kinds of wine, try those around 90 points, as you'll know being getting a good sample of that type...
As your taste develops, you may find you disagree with these scores, but that's cool... they can be just a great starting point.
well, if you have a preference of white or red then you should already know of a few good wines. personally i prefer rheinheissen but it's a white. i've gotten my best advise from those who work in the liquor stores. so that may be another avenue for you to search down if the answers you get are not to your liking.
"Jacobs Creek" and "Montana" make some really nice red and white wines, and so does "Yellowglen". They can be bought in Australia
