Worked as a bartender in college

No

A good bar tender in any state will not drink while working. My favorite bar tender at the Biltmore Hotel would , if I bought him a drink pour himself a small glass of water with a twist of lemon. Or, he would say: "Thanks, catch me some other time.".

Not if they want to get fired.

They can and do but it is not legal to do so.

I DO NOT KNOW OF AN ESTABLISHMENT THAT DOES NOT ENCOURAGE THERE BARTENDERS TO ACCEPT DRINKS FROM THERE CUSTOMERS. THEY USUALLY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DRINK THEM WHILE ON DUTY BUT THE ESTABLISHMENT MAKES THERE MONEY ON HOW MANY DRINKS ARE SOLD. THEREFORE NO OWNER OR MANAGER WOULD DISCOURAGE CUSTOMERS PURCHASING DRINKS FOR THERE BARTENDERS.

I TENDED BAR FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS AND EVEN THOUGH I DID NOT DRINK ON DUTY I DID ACCEPT ALL DRINKS FROM MY PATRONS. AFTER MY SHIFT WAS DONE I DID DRINK WITH MY PATRONS AND THEY ENJOYED KNOWING THAT I WAS AVAILABLE TO SOCIALIZE WITH THEM AFTER MY SHIFT WAS DONE.

the answer for any state is no. If someone is injured at work and might need workmans comp, a breathalizer is always administered and if it reads above .000 workmans comp is denied. That being said, 90% of bartenders drink while working whether or not their drink has been paid for, barowners know it goes on and most dont really care.

use your head man, in the first place do you want to count your till at the end of your shift? seconed the money that a coustemer buys the drink for could be your tip, that is not your alcohol to be drinking or giving away for free. i used to drink shot for shot when i was in my 20's. now i entertain everyone with my stories and usless information. if it is just a college gig go for it .
