Question: I was drinking wine with my friend the other day and he makes his own. I got really drunk really fast and wasn't drinking more than I normally do. Is there usually more alcohol in homemade wine?

There is typically

Results: The mean %ABV is found to vary substantially over time and across states, with US means ranging from 16.2% in 1962 to a low of 10.5% in 1991. By 2002, the US mean %ABV had risen to nearly 11.5%. and much lower ABV in Beer, like 5.5 by default and 7% or more in specialty brews.

John.

If your friend is not carefully measuring and testing, there very well could be.

Depends on the alcohol consentration. All alcohols have diff levels...just ask him :)

No, wine, even homemade, is usually in about the same concentration (~10-16%) as professional. It may have a different effect on you though; as with other drugs, the way alcohol is adminsitered has a noticeable influence on its effect.

My homebrewed meads and ciders (which were also about wine strength) used to kick my a** until I got used to them. So my guess is, if you keep drinking your friend's homebrew you'll get used to it and it will feel like normal wine after a while. In the meantime, enjoy the ride.
