depends upon what it fell onto... but the TV show Mythbusters found that the 5 second rule does NOT work, but their surface was very dirty and goopy.

Honestly I am not sure. I heard that it does take 5 seconds for bacteria to adhere itself to an item, but then again, what about bacteria that is adhered to what ever sticks to your food item? Curious to check back on the answers you get
I live by the 3 second rule.
No risks then. That extra 2 seconds is all it takes for those little buggers to jump onto my spillage!

Let's say it's the floor somewhere....get on your knees, stick your toungue out, place it on the spot where you would have dropped it, pull your toungue back in and swallow.
If you're cool with that, I guess it does work.
It doesn't work, that's only child's logic; bacteria contaminate on contact, they don't need 5 second, once is touched is contaminated. If you don't get sick is just pure luck.
as a bio-chemist if you are cooking all germs and bacteria are dead after 45-1min30 sec of cook time besidesgerms are friends not enemies.we developeimmunity to those bus n germs the more we get exposed. so for the neat freaks yes ewwwww but friendlier than say having a pet in the house.
depends on what you dropped if its a dry substance and didn't pick up much off the floor yoiur safe. but if it was wet or moist its more likelly to pick up dirt. but my uncle always said a lil dirt never hurt nobody

The bacteria everyones are claiming are present every where. You can see the dust and lint on a bright sunny day So you breath the bacteria every day.
