What is good for a first time scotch drinker??
ive herd glenmorangie is the best single malt...but how about some blends..i dont want any rot gut bum beer but it doesnt have to be the most expensive thing in the store

My first suggestion is to do some research. Go to Yahoo and type in scotch and learn what to expect from the many different styles of scotch. You must do this to truly enjoy scotch. You will find that scotch is probably the most complex spirit in the world. I would suggest that you start off trying it on the rocks with a splash of water. This will unlock many of the scotch's complex flavors, and lighten the burn or bite of the alcohol. A few suggestions on some to try are The Glenlivet 12yr, a great single malt, Johnny Walker Black for a great blend, Laphriog for a very earthy Highland scotch(not for beginners), and Scapa for a nice smooth scotch with hints of honey, heather and vanilla. Make sure to roll the scotch around in you mouth so that it comes in contact with all of your taste buds. Hope this helps!

try 3 wisemen.. Pour Johnnie Walker Black, Jim Beam and Jack daniels and I promised... you wouldnt want to drink whiskeys anymore...lol.

J&B is a pretty decent blend of whisky. I would try out Glenlevit or macallen12 or 18. Those are some pretty decent single malts that don't run exremely expensive. The main thing to remember is to try a variety so you can find one that you enjoy best.
All the hard-core scotch drinkers I wait on prefer either Johnny Walker Red or J&B. Johnny Walker seems to be the most popular.

But scotch is gross. If you want to drink good stuff go to good 'ole kentucky bourbon. Woodford Reserve, Maker's Mark, and Bulleit Bourbon are all good, decent priced bourbons.
The Johnny Walkers (Red, Black, Green, Gold, Blue) are scotches, and scotches ARE whiskeys... Their being called "scotch" comes from where they are distilled... in Soctland or surrounding Islands.
If I am "trying" something, I always go top shelf. You can not expect to really understand what it is until you have had the good stuff.
Johnny Walker Black is a good scotch blend, or Chivas.. Both are good scotches and they will give you a taste of something good without breaking the bank for a Johnny Walker Blue or Gold.
I would buy a few different varieties and try them to see what tastes best to you.
Also, remember that scotch is best drank "neat", room temp... Just a glass and a bottle.
You already know the best one. For low cost try 'Ballantine'.
