Usually red would go well with Sausage and red sauce!. The robust flavors on the food will overwhelm most whites!.
In the red range, you could easily drink a Cabernet, Zinfindel, Merlot or Pinot Noir (listed from more intense to less intense)!. I'd suggest that if you dont' really know what kind of wine you like, start with a Pinot Noir, they are much easier on the palate (there are less tannins that give that dry sensation that can be overwhelming to many people)!.
There are lots of great Pinot Noir's from Napa valley or the Oregon Willemette Valley that are quite reasonably priced!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Chianti or Ruffino, both are good Italian red wines!. Chianti is the wine that comes in the bottle that has a basket on it!. Ruffino is a little more expensive because it is not considered an everyday Italian wine like Chianti!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I prefer Zinfandel for that kind of meal!. California: Sonoma's Dry Creek Valley if feeling rich, Lodi if feeling not so rich!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
There is an excellent but not as well known wine that my husband I enjoy!. It is a white chianti--and does go well with sausage and peppers, sausage and sauce, etc!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
The best wines are - without doubt - Italian red wines - they are just made for such dishes!. A Montepulciano or Barbera would be perfect!.
Someone suggested a white Chianti -- you'll not find one since all Chianti is red!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It really does depend what type of red sauce, but your best all-purpose wine for red sauce is, as mentioned above, Barbera!. Barbera's acidity allows it to stand up to the acidity and light sweetness of tomato sauce!. If you are making a heavier red sauce, though, burlier wines would be better pairings!. Sticking to Italians is safe!.
The reason there is no "white Chianti" is because all wine that bears the word Chianti must be from Chianti and apply for Denominazione Origine Controllata status from the appropriate Italian government agency!. There are rules as to white wines may be included!. For instance, any Chianti must contain at least 75% Sangiovese grapes, which produces a red wine!. I believe that up to 15% can be a local white varietal!.
Prior to 1967, producers were allowed to label white wines as Chiant Bianco!. No longer is that allowed and white wines from the region would be labeled as a different DOC, as a Toscano IGT (less rules for this label), or simply as Trebbiano, the grape used to make the wines!.
If you would like, feel free to e-mail me your recipe and I can pick out a nice wine for you!. Gabriel at LamorindaWineSociety!.com!.
