Am I an alcoholic?!

Question:

Am I an alcoholic?

I work full time Monday to Friday and I never miss work. Every night (for the last 3 years) I come home and drink vodka and juice. I go through a 26er in 3 days. I never drive drunk, never let it interfere with my plans, etc. Also I have built up such a high tolerance to vodka, that I drink a lot and don't really get a buzz.

I never drink before 3pm. Is what I'm doing that different than say a construction worker that comes home from work, drinks 6 beers and passes out every night?

Answers:
According to Webster's, an alcoholic is one that is affected by alcoholism, so alcoholism is:
1 : continued excessive or compulsive use of alcoholic drinks
2 : a: poisoning by alcohol b : a chronic disorder marked by excessive and usually compulsive drinking of alcohol leading to psychological and physical dependence or addiction

Per your description, definition 1 says that you are an alcoholic (3 days to go through a bottle is excessive) and definition 2 would be true if what you have is an addiction. Doing anything everyday for an extended period of time shows proof of an addiction, but only you can say that.

If you have destroyed your ability to drink this much alcohol and "not really get a buzz", then you are an alcoholic.

Not missing work, not driving drunk, and not passing out.. none of those are in the criteria to determine if you are an alcoholic. But by not missing work, not driving drunk, you are showing that you are a responsible alcoholic.

to persuade you to stop, just for your sufficient information; alcohol causes cancer!!

there is such a thing as a functioning alcoholic.

No of course your not an alcoholic just a lush. Big Difference

Yes. Anytime you find it necessary to do something on a regular basis you are addicted. If you're addicted to alcohol you are an alcoholic. Construction workers too. Time to call AA and make a new routine.

Why are you punnishing yourself every day with that?
Do you hate yourself? :0(
Quit buying the stuff and address your problems.
People drink for a reason. You know it's not good for your body. There is an underlying issue you need to work out then you can stop punnishing youself. This is just like over eating.
Please get help. Even if it's online. Find a Yahoo group for alcoholics or your unresolved issue from your past.

I think you show signs of alcoholism-the one question to ask yourself is: could you stop this daily habit if you decided to? And the only way to answer that is to try...if you find that you cannot go without your daily vodka, you probably are suffering from alcoholism. Whether or not you are an alcoholic, I would not recommend continuing this lifestyle as you could wind up with some pretty serious problems from too much alcohol consumption.

Your not an alcoholic as I can see it but you would want to slow down on consumption because you'll have severe problems with health in the future.
