The Sazerac Cocktail was invented in New Orleans right before the Civil War in 1959!. It's one of the oldest documented cocktails!.
1/2 tsp Pernod (or other Absinthe substitute)
1/2 tsp Simple Syrup
1 dash Peychaud bitters
2 ounces rye whiskey
Jerry Thomas's book from 1862 mentioned above is thought to be the 1st published bartending guide!. Many of his recipes included flip drinks (which actually contained raw egg), fizz drinks (which include club soda)- like a sloe gin fizz:
1 oz sloe gin
1 oz gin
3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
1 oz simple syrup (basically sugar water)
top w/ soda water
Apparently, people ate fish & chips, cranberries, deviled ham, & breakfast cereal, & they drank ginger ale as well!.
