Why can't I drink wine without getting a headache?!
Just curious because I can roll with the big boys for sure on beer and liquor-- but wine makes my head pound!.

It is actually an allergy to wine but it could be an allergy to one of a hundred different components!. Here's a small list of the possibilites - normally these are the ones that trigger headaches!.
1!. Sulfites - naturally occurring in most wines but if you look on the labels of some wines, you will see the words "contains no sulfites"!. These may be safe for you if this is the allergy!.
2!. Yeast - there are a wide variety of cultured yeasts that wineries use!. Some of them are even specific to the particular wine but that is dependant on what the winemaker chooses to use!.
3!. Vines - different wineries use different clones and different root stocks!. It's not impossible that you could be allergic to one or a variety of these but this is not a common allergy!.
4!. Oak - not all wines are put into barrels or have oak chips added to them but some of them can cause all manner of problems!. Just as an example, in Chardonnay, if it is oaked in French barrels, I will not react but if it was in American oak barrels, my stomach will be upset for hours!.
Each person reacts differently to a variety of influences!. What I would suggest is going to a winery for a tour and at the tasting bar, try a variety of their wines!. You will probably find that there are some wines that won't give you a headache but if you do react, at least you've only had a small amount (i!.e!. an ounce or so versus a standard 5 oz glass)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Some people are bothered by sulfates in the wine, giving them headaches!. One option is to buy sulfate free wines, but they will be hard to find in some areas of the country!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I heard somewhere that it is usually the cheaper types of wine that give you headaches!. try getting the more expensive ones maybe they will be betterWww@FoodAQ@Com
