Where did the term drunker than kooter brown originate?

Good God I thought only folks from the South say that.I believe a guy called Kooter was a real drunk and his reputation was as such.Then when another person got just as drunk----there come the saying.Make sense to you.Now that would make them a hard core drunkard...Good question, where did you hear it?I heard it over 40 years ago...

Never heard of it in Arkansas...

Who the proverbial Cooter Brown is no one seems to know, but this may have originally been a black expression from the Carolinas.

It is believed that this expression came up from the Blacks from the Carolinas.' It probably derives from some proverbial drunkard named Cooter Brown.

Cooter Brown lived in Cheraw N.C. and was the town's drunk, thus the saying.............thats what my daddy told me, and my daddy knows everything!
