You get a lot of sangria in the US that is more like fruit salad in wine than actual sangria!.
If you go to Spain, this is what you get when you order Sangria:
3/4 cups simple syrup (1 part sugar, 1 part water heated until dissoved and cooled)
1 750ml bottle of dry red wine (Spanish Rioja is a good choice)
One lemon
One orange
In a pitcher or punchbowl combine simple syrup and rioja!. Thinly slice half the lemon and half of the orange and add to the sweetened wine!. Juice the other halves and add the juice!.
Chill before serving!. (You can of course adjust the sweetness to your liking)!.
When I'm really pressed for time though, I break with tradition and get a big bottle of cheap port wine (you don't want to use the good stuff for this), which is already sweet, cut up some citrus into it and squeeze in some juice and serve it over ice since the port is a bit stronger and denser than the rioja!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
