Good wine for a picnic? would a muscat work?!

Question:

Good wine for a picnic? would a muscat work?

suggestions on a type of wine for a romatic picnic. Was simply going to prepare some type of salad with a little chicken or steak mixed in then have some fresh fruit for dessert...strawberries, grapes, etc. each other hopefully...so wine suggestions? I'm not a big wine drinker myself and prefer sweeter libations

Answers:
Good luck with your romantic picnic date! In my opinion, a muscat would work, but there are better choices. I put a link all about picnicking with wine in the "sources" box. Check it out. If it were me, I would put chicken in the salad as opposed to steak. Serve a white wine, they are generally more refreshing and not as filling. Make sure that the wine is cold though, or else it will not be very good. Check out the link. And have fun!

any Cabernet savignon will do, or zinfandel which is sweeter

Champagne is great for fresh fruit. You might also try a Spanish Albarino for the salad.

you're sweet. it depends on the meat you are putting in the salad. with the chicken salad a white riesling or with the steak salad a pinot. very romantic. thumbs up mister

Personally, I like a good quality White Zinfandel....like Beringer. It's not too expensive and goes with almost anything. Very nice chilled.

Zinfandel all the way!!

Go for a Reisling. Ask the store attendant for Chateu St. Jean

Try quadywinery.com and troonvineyard.com.

Quady has great muscats - Essancia orange muscat and Elysium black muscat and you MUST taste the River Guide White from Troon Vineyard!!

If you are just going to the grocery store, grab a bottle of Chateau St. Michelle Riesling. It's on the sweeter side and goes with everything.

Muscat is a great wine to take to a picnic. You need to drink something that you enjoy. Muscat is usually drank for dessert rather than with the main meal.

A Rielsing is a light, sweet wine to drink with food. This one is available in many areas:
Ch. Ste. Michelle 2005 Indian Wells Riesling Unfolds with flavors of passionfruit, gooseberry and subtle herbaceousness. The wine is mouthfilling with good texture and finishes well with cleansing acidity and great length. ($9.99)

The ultimate picnic wine in my opinion is a good rose (pronounced Rose-ay). Rose does not mean white zinfandel or white merlot! Those are bastardizations. Go for the real thing from the south of France (Bandol, Languedoc, Tavel, etc.). They are beautiful served slightly chilled on a warm spring or summer day. They also go well with many finger foods like sausages, cheese and others. My favorite by far is the Domaine Tempier Bandol Rose. Other good ones are Mordoree Tavel Rose and you can find nice Italian Rosatos for inexpensive.

You mention muscat, which is not a bad choice, with a bit more sweetness more towards the range of a dessert wine. A classic dessert in the South of France is a mixed fresh fruit salad in a cup with a Muscat de Beaumes de Venice poured over it! It is a muscat from the region which is bright, fruity and slightly sweet. It makes for a very romantic picnic dessert.

sure why not

a muscat might be a little sweet with a meal. try a viognier.

wild irish rose is good, as is thunderbird, and boone's farm, but only strawberry hill boone's farm
