Whiskey behind the ear?

I've seen on TV where a guy will dip his thumb in his whiskey or alcohol then rub it behind his ear. WHY?!?!

Its a way to dis-infect or clean out your ears. you can also get a small bowl of alcohol and put your earrings or rings in it to clean them...I think its safe on gold too because I have seen my mom do it with her wedding ring.
