Are sulfites in red wine(sulfur di-oxide) harmful to ones health or metabolism?!

Question:

Are sulfites in red wine(sulfur di-oxide) harmful to ones health or metabolism?

Wouldn't it be better to drink Organic wines that contain NO sulfites?

Answers:
It's true that preservatives in food can lead to complications, but in this particular case, the body produces about a thousand milligrams of sulfur dioxide a day. This isn't a problem for most people, but some people lack the enzyme (or the ability to produce the enzyme) that breaks down sulfites. But there are a lot of myths about sulfites as well. All wine contains it to some degree, as it's a bi-product of the yeast fermentation. Only processing the wine after fermentation reduces them. The US requires a warning label to be included on all wine that it contains sulfites. There are very few winemakers that make wine without adding sulfites, and most of them do not filter the existing ones out. And finally, sulfites don't cause headaches, as some people believe. Red wine contains something that causes headaches in certain people but it has yet to be isolated in a clinical or chemical environment.

Hope I helped!

5+ years of wine drinking, 2+ years of winemaking.

especially if u are allergic

Every wine contains some sulfites. It is a bi-product of the wine making process. It won't harm you, it's just that some people are allergic to them. Kind of like some people are allergic to MSG. Hope this helps.

Organic wines contain sulfites, just not ADDED sulfites.

Sulfites occur naturally in the wine making process.

10 glasses of your average red wine contain the same amount of sulfites as one dried apricot, so unless you are really sensitive, it won't affect you much at all.

All wines contain sulfites. They're naturally occuring parts of the grape juice, and in higher concentrations in the skins. While some people are highly sensitive to them, they aren't a health risk to most.

ALL WINES HAVE SULFITES, organic or otherwise.

Duh.
