How do I Properly Use a Wine Decanter?!
I was recently at a Stag & Doe and won a crystal wine decanter!. I'd like to use it, but i have some questions!. How long can wine sit in it and still be safely drank!? Does the wine actually taste better after being decanted!? Are some wines better decanted than others!? Thanks!Www@FoodAQ@Com
Answers:
The bigger the red, the more likely it should be decanted!. See: Syrah, Petite Syrah, Zinfandel and Cab Sav!. And usually the younger the red, go ahead and decant!.
Yes, the big reds will taste better after decanting, gives it a chance to breathe!.
Decant about 30 to 60 minutes before serving!.
My rule is: whatever has been decanted must be drank that evening!. But that is always my rule!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

To add to truenorth's answer: I can't really see any way you can hurt a wine by decanting, so if the decanter is pretty and you'd like to use it; by all means!. Not all wines will improve with "air" so you will just have to experiment for yourself!.
Finish the decanter that evening!. The whole point of the decanter is to expose the wine to more air than the bottle will, so the wine will spoil faster!. If you must, return the wine to the bottle from the decanter for overnight storage, but I still recommend finishing it off!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You use a wine decanter to serve wine at the time you are going to drink it!.usually allowing it to breathe for about 30mins: red wine is better decanted!.as is port and sherry, whisky and southern comfort!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
