I would get a lunchmeat tray and a veggie platter. People cant expect to much for a 1 year olds party. Besides sounds like your pretty busy and got enough to do. Just get some rolls and maybe a few bags of chips to go along with it. Wont hurt the wallet to bad. As for the mother out law. Dont worry about her and if it comes to it tell her get the hell out and dont let the door hit her in the ***.

How about sub sandwiches from Tubby's/Subway/or your local sub shop. No prep work for you!! Get a six foot sub and have them slice it up. A couple of bowls of chips around and voila - a PARTY!

Oh - and don't let M-O-L get to you! Someone always has something to say about how you raise your kids or how you throw a party or whatever the situation is. As long as you are comfortable with your decisions than you shouldn't stress. Just keep it in the back of your mind that you know for sure that your M-O-L is NOT someone you can't count on for any assistance. Showing her that you can do things without her help will surely put her in her place.

Sounds like alcohol would do the job.

Go to the deli at your grocery store and pick-up and snack tray or a veggie tray...OR...put some chips in a basket, some dip in a pretty bowl, some peanuts in another bowl...and call it day...
As we say here in the South..."Ya wanna feed 'em, not fatten 'em up"!!!!

something quick could be hotdogs....

but to dress it up instead of regular buns do this:

take crossiant rolls (dough) and rap the dough around the hotdog

bake it in the oven just as regular (instructions on package)

it is good to eat and carry around w/o the hot dog falling out of the bun!!

Get a keg.

Maybe some BBQ Beef sandwiches. You can cook a roast in a crock pot the day before the party. Put a roast into your crock pot, fill it about 3/4 with water, add salt and pepper, and let it cook on low all day long. When the meat is so tender it starts to fall apart, remove it from the crock pot, put it into a tupperware bowl, and start shredding it with a fork. Cover the meat, and throw it in the refrigerator until the morning. On the day of the party, put the meat back into the crock pot, add BBQ sauce, and leave it on low until it's ready to be served.
It's very easy to make, and doesn't require you hanging out in the kitchen all day. Then you could maybe just serve some kind of chips on the side.

most groscery stores deli now have great party packages on fried chicken deals. a 50 piece and potato salad, coleslaw would do the trick.

Wow mean mom in law!
Have you thought about hamburgers, potate cassorale, baked beans, and rolls? can't losse with that.

When you do the burgers put season salt and pepper on them.

I don't know the recipe for the potatoes sorry!

and baked beans put baccon in

I made a luxurious spaghetti and meatballs meal the day before. You need 2 large pots, holding at least a gallon or more. One for the sauce, one for the pasta. A large platter too. These are good things to have in the house.
The night before I made "italian gravy" you can find a good one on the internet. I kept that in the pot in the fridge. T

Wash all your salad green the night before and layer the salad in a big bowl. Buy 2 loaves italian bread, fresh butter.

The next day, put the pot of sauce on the stove reheating. Meanwhile, boil up enough salted water to boil up two boxes of pasta, I like fettucine. When pasta done, drain, pour onto large buttered platter, then pour on some sauce. Keep rest of sauce in the pot. Pass around the salad, pasta, sauce, italian bread. Red or white wine.

i think you should pack some many sandwiches or something from subway so that it can be good for their health

finger sandwiches, you can make your hubby fry nuggets and potatoes and grill some burgers (man's job)...salad...get beside the birthday cake some donuts or cupcakes, make some jello (it takes 10 minutes to prepare)

Maybe those little wheel sandwich things or subs and then some salad and chips and soda and water!!

Order pizza, and dont invite your mother in law. :)

a big juicy steak
