I don't think there's a definite answer!. But I believe I've seen studies that show that you have a higher chance of being an alcoholic if you have family members who are!. It might be an environmental factor of being exposed to them so you may not need to worry!. Alcoholism runs in my family but I have not had a problem probably because I do not spend time with them!. :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes!. Its very true that alcoholism runs in familes!. I think some of those tendencies are from the parents drinking in front of children!. If a child grows up seeing their parents drink excessively then they think its ok to drink like that!. Its not always that way tho because I don't remember my mom drinking and like i explain below I inherited some of her behavior

In my case, my mom is an alcoholic (20 years sober tho), my grandpa was, my mom's two brothers (one who almost died in a drunk driving crash), her sister, and nearly all of their children drink A LOT!. In my case, my mom saw early on that I inherited her love of alcohol!. It was her seeing these tendencies early on that kept me from becoming an alcoholic!. She sat me down and told me that I needed to be aware of my behavior and learn to control it if I wanted to continue being a regular 22 year old!. I just know now my limit and I have the characteristics of an alcoholic!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A very interesting question, have a star!. I believe you are right to say that there is a genetic propensity to become addicted to anything - alcohol, gambling, sex, whatever!. People without this in their nature find it puzzling that others get hooked by drugs, alcohol etc!. and (wrongly) think these guys are just not able to control themselves!. It is an illness, and should be diagnosed and treated!. It should not stop you having a glass of cool white wine on a hot summers day however, just watch out for the symptoms!. Your Mum is partly right to say be careful, alcohol is a drug, and kills like other drugs!. Apply common sense and you will be OK!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't know about the gene or mutation ,but i do know that if you have a member in your family that had a drinking problem it is likely that you could inherit it!.Some people especially alcoholics are fine as long as they don't have that first drink, after the first drink they are usually gone and will not stop til all the booze is gone!. My husband had a drinking problem and went thru A!.A!. it has been 20 some years since he had a drink !.It is life changing!. I think the important thing to remember is that there is help out there and lots of support!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Apparently there is!. But it is not called an alcoholic gene it is a predisposition to addcition that is in your genes!.
I personaly dont believe it, but was told it but a few lecturers at Uni last week!.

If you are aware that it may be a problem then it may not happen!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
