AV is giving you bad advice!. As a veteran cigar smoker and friend of former tobacconists, I know Cubans are bad news unless you have a real fool-proof plan to get them (and everyone knows every keystroke on the internet can be monitered!)
Dominican Cohibas are fine, but I would really recommend something more unique and less "mainstream!."
For a beginner, I would recommend a CAO Gold or Anniversario!.
You can also look into Punch, Rocky Patel Edge, Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real, or pretty much anything by A!. Fuente!.
Check out the sampler packs from sites like
http://www!.jrcigars!.com
http://www!.cigarbid!.com
These both offer some of the best prices available, plus they have great deals on variety packs that you can't normally get in your local tobacconist!.
As a novice (no insult intended), you may want to stick to more of the Cameroon or Natural wrappers, then graduate into Maduros!.
also, Cigar Aficionado Magazine is a great resource!.!.!. and great reading material to complement the perfect stick!

If you search the internet for online cigar stores not located in the US, you actually can get Cubans sent to you!.
A few years ago I found one online (located in Europe) and just to test them, I ordered a couple of different brands of Cuban cigars for delivery to the US!. To my complete surprise, they arrived!. I guess it isn't their problem that Cubans are banned in the US, so they didn't care!. I'm not sure if giving you the info would be like "conspiracy to commit a crime" since technically Cubans are illegal in the US, but here's a hint: Do a Google search for "buy havana cigars spain" and you'll come to the website!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
