Answers:
The fast answer: if you like it!

That's the first thing we learned in wine-class at the catering school: good wine is wine you like!.

The somewhat longer answer is:

Look at it:
Hold it up against a white napkin in a well lit place, and look at the colour!. Along the edge it should be not too purple - that's the trademark of younger wine, which can be fine, (f!.ex!. Beaujolais Nuveaux) if you like it !.!. but keep in mind that ALL cheap wine have that purplish colour!
I look for a little brownish colour around the edge!.

Smell it:
It should not smell of cork and it should not be sharp (again :unless it's a Beaujolais Nuv!.)!.

Taste it:
Look for the nuances in the taste - is it fruity, vanilla, oaky!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Age you can tell because it's on the label!.

You will need to sample many types of wine before you are able to taste the various subtle nuances of flavors!. However, the easiest way to tell is to buy a wine guide or some magazines!. After you learn more about types of wine, purchase different varieties, and different wines of the same variety!. Attend some wine tastings, and have some at home for yourself!. Take notes, and soon enough you will have a good idea of what you like!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Wine is like art!. It is very subjective!. Different people have different preference of wine!. As a result, you need to try various wines to see what wine is good and what is bad!.

In general, there are 2 factors involved in making a wine good or bad!.

First, it is the wine itself!. A great wine is something that wows you!. A truly wonderful wine smells amazing, what you need to do is to close your eye and imagine what you are smelling and taste!. An ordinary wine spells alcoholic and grapey!. It is simple, no depth to it, just grape juice with alcohol in it - nothing too exciting!. A wonderful wine has complexity of various flavors and tastes - different berrys, flowers, chocolate/cocca, wood, or even mineral!. It is the various layers of delicacy that comes out of the wine and excite your imagination!. When you pair that wine with food, it brings out the intracacy of the food!. Pairing of food is what makes wine a better beverage than any other drink!. As for aging, aging soften the wine by breaking down tannin, which makes wine strong bitter!. As a result, aged wine shows its underlying character - layers and layers of wonderful aroma!.

Secondly, a wine is great because of its significance in our social life!. To me, wine is about being with friends and have fun!. It is a celebration of life - how exciting life can be and how someone has put such hard work to make something so special for us to remember by!. As mentioned in the movie "Sideway", we all like to think about what life is like when the wine was initially made - the climate, the terrior, the people!. To have opportunity to visit where the wine is made make it even more exciting!. My friends and I love to celebrate our lives with wine!. I enjoy hosting my monthly wine tasting dinner, where everyone bring a nice bottle or wine and share, so everyone can have many different wines for the cost of a bottle!. It is a highly anticipated event that we all enjoy!. A wine drank at those setting are much more exciting and probably better!.

Try and enjoy the wine!. It is one of the most wonderful art form in the world!. CheersWww@FoodAQ@Com

Taste is personal and some people have more taste buds then others!. What I mean by that is ,wine that tastes good to me may be not really tasty to you and vice verse!. Wine will taste different every time you drink it as it constantly evolves!. It is a good idea to decant red wine prior consumption as it needs to aerate!. My suggestion would be to try different types of wine and choose ones that you like!.
P!.S!. Not all red wines will or need need to be aged!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
