Can you bartend if you never drink?!

Question: Can you bartend if you never drink!?
I've been sober for over 10 years!. I have great customer service skills and feel that I would enjoy bartending!. My fiance thinks I'm crazy cuz he thinks I need to know how a drink tastes so that if I make it wrong, I know how to appease the customer!. I view it as a science of balances, adjusting to the customer if necessary!. Has anyone ever done this, or am I chasing a dream!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

I've been sober for over 4 years, but I'm still bartending!. So, yea, it CAN be done!. Just make sure that YOU can do it!. Does take alot of willpower sometimes!. I do know that my $ has basically doubled now that I'm sober!. I'm sure service is better, and I think maybe people respect me more!. Are you sure your fiance is worried about you, or could he be a little insecure about your working in a bar!? Good luck to you!Www@FoodAQ@Com

First + foremost : congratulations on your 10 years of sobriety!.

I have worked in many different aspects of customer service!. Personality is one thing, but those who order mixed drinks are very particular on how they want it made!.

Like a martini : one olive or two!?

Tequila would they want it chilled or room temperature, with or without a lime!?

I don't know how complex the bar is, but I don't know of many who only serve only bottled beer and pretzels!.

If you haven't tasted what your customer is ordering, or know what's in it it doesn't give you or your employer much credibility as you may not know how to make it!.

The best comparasion I can give you is, would you buy a car from someone who bikes to work!? One can only deceive their client for so long !.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I work with 2 other bartenders who have never had a drink in there life!!! You can do it!.!.!.but the had to REALLY STUDY to know the exact correct pours!. also though!.!.!.one of them will though have us taste there drinks here and there to see if they are right on or not!. They both do fine!!!! I drink and bartend and people will still send drinks back because like you say it doesn't meet there taste!. So if they say its too sweet you fix it!.!.!.they say its too strong!.!.you fix it!. P!.S!. Its rare when anyone complains a drink is too strong!.!.!.you might want to check their ID again! =) Good luck I'm with you I know it could be done!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, not really!. There seems to always be some new thing coming out that people want to try!. While most drinks do have certain measurements, many people have their own personal twist on them that would be difficult to do without at least tasting!. also, if avoiding alcohol is your goal, spending a lot of time in a bar probably isnt the best idea!. I think it would be very difficult to be a chef if you didnt eat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Can it be done!? Yes, sure it can!. However, it probably wouldn't be the best choice seeing as how I get the idea you may have had a battle with alcoholism before!. At the same time though, I think if I were to be a bartender, I would love to not be a drinker because I'm sure it's pretty tempting on some of the slower nights to just sit around pounding back a few!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

you can achieve your dream!. but you will have to taste your drinks!. i see bartenders using more drink stirrers as tasting spoons!. that way you dip it in the drink, put a DROP on your tongue and you know if it taste good or not!. you will not be able to bartend if you're not willing to taste the drinks you make!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think it's a real handicap to not taste your own drink!. Good bartenders really must taste, at least while learning (and often even when they are preparing it)!.

I also think it would be a mistake to put yourself in an extreme drinking culture when you are sober!.

Sorry, but I have to side with your fiance!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

you don't need to drink to bar-tend its not like you are going to take a big mouth full outta someones drink b4 you give it to them!. if u follow the way a drink is meant to b made then u will be fine its not like every bartender has had every drink out there!.
so i say follow Ur dreams n b a bartender i did it n i loved it!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The real question here is do you think you can bartend and not fall off the wagon!? I went back to drinking just being a waitress!.!.!. But I f you think you can you would make a great deal in tips because you do know the drinks and know how to adjust!.!.!.Props to you and good luck!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes!. There are recipies with measurements for drinks and it can be done!. My only concern is you being sober for 10 years!. Is it because of an alcohol problem!? If so, I don't know how good of an idea it is to spend you time around alcohol 8+ hours a day!. But you know yourself better than me so if its what you want to do, go for it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You don't need to drink to be a regular bartender!. Any fool can follow a recipe and there mixed drink recipe books in bars!. The only way it might hinder you is if there are alcohols that you don't know what they taste like then you could not create your own mixed drinks!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I agree with Christnp!.!.!.!. it's just like cooking!. You always taste your food!.
Sorry if I'm over stepping but, I suggest an extra AA meeting (not being funny) because you are tempting fate!. It only takes one step and you can fall!. Don't put yourself in the position when you don't have to!.
Good luck to youWww@FoodAQ@Com

Of course you can bartend, but your fiance is right!. !. !. customer's will want to know how drinks taste, beer and wine recommendations usually!. Try it and see how it goes!Www@FoodAQ@Com

You have to taste the drinks!.!.!.!.seriously!. You might get away with it in a beer joint, but you aren't going to be able to mix complicated drinks!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

heck no , go for it girl I dont drink anything but beer but can mix a mean drink for anyone, i have NO I diea whay i t tastes like but I am always told its great! good liuckWww@FoodAQ@Com

My mother said, "Never trust a Skinny Cook!." These days however there are so many recipes for drinks that I think that you would be fine with any concoction book to back you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Go for it! If anything you'll have a clearer head when making drinks!Www@FoodAQ@Com
